Why You was built around honesty — including how we handle your personal information. This page explains exactly what we collect, where it lives, and what we do with it.

The short version

  • Your journal entries, mood check-ins, and assessment responses never leave your device.
  • We don't have a user database. We don't store your personal information on our servers.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see your card details.
  • We don't sell your data. We don't share it with advertisers.
  • You can delete everything we know about you by clearing your browser storage.

Data Safety

What we collect and where it lives

Why You stores all personal data directly in your browser's local storage using a technology called Zustand Persist. This means your data lives on your device — not on our servers.

Stored on your device only:
  • Your name (entered during onboarding)
  • Assessment and attachment style results
  • Journal entries and reflection responses
  • Mood and energy check-ins
  • Lesson progress and completion history
  • Premium subscription status

None of this information is transmitted to Why You servers. If you clear your browser data or use a different device, this information will not be available.

Payments and subscription data

Payments are processed entirely by Stripe, a PCI-DSS Level 1 certified payment processor. When you subscribe:

  • Your card number, expiry, and CVV are entered directly into Stripe's secure checkout — we never see them.
  • Stripe sends us a confirmation that a subscription was activated and a subscriber ID.
  • That subscriber ID is stored locally on your device to track your premium access.
  • Stripe's privacy policy governs all payment data: stripe.com/privacy

Analytics and tracking

Why You does not currently use third-party analytics, advertising trackers, or behavioral monitoring tools. We do not use cookies for tracking purposes.

If we add analytics in the future, we will update this policy and default to the most privacy-preserving options available (aggregated, anonymized data only).

Deleting your data

Because your data is stored locally, you are always in control of it. To delete everything:

To delete all Why You data from your device:
  • Open your browser settings
  • Navigate to Site Data or Storage
  • Find whyyouapp.com (or localhost:3000 if local)
  • Clear site data

You can also reset your progress from within the app at any time via your Profile page. This permanently removes all local data including your journal, check-ins, and progress.

Privacy Policy

How we use your information

The information you provide is used solely to deliver and personalize your experience within the Why You app. Specifically:

  • Your name is used to personalize greetings and your dashboard.
  • Your assessment results are used to recommend content and generate your attachment profile.
  • Your journal entries are used to surface past reflections within the app.
  • Your progress data is used to display completion status and unlock content.
  • Your subscription status is used to determine which modules you can access.

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.

Data sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties, except:

  • Stripe receives payment data to process your subscription (see Payments section above).
  • If required by law, we may disclose information to comply with legal obligations — though given that we don't hold your personal data on our servers, there is very little we could provide.

Children's privacy

Why You is intended for users 16 years of age and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information through the app, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes by updating the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

We will never retroactively change this policy in ways that reduce your privacy protections without explicit notice and consent.
